Moon Music (full title Music of the Spheres Vol. II: Moon Music) is the upcoming tenth studio album by British rock band Coldplay.[1] It is set for release on 4 October 2024 by Parlophone in the United Kingdom and Atlantic Records in the United States, being the sequel to From Earth with Love (2021) on their Music of the Spheres project. Both albums are concurrently being supported through the Music of the Spheres World Tour.[1] Guest appearances include Burna Boy, Little Simz, Elyanna, Tini and Ayra Starr.
Background
On 17 June 2024, Coldplay announced through their social media that Moon Music would be released on 4 October.[2] On 16 August 2024, the band revealed its track listing.[3] El Mundo,[4] Los Angeles Times,[5] Vulture,[6] and To Vima ranked the album among the most anticipated of the year.[7]
Recording
The album was partially recorded at the Punta Paloma studio in Tarifa, Spain.[8] Coldplay spent two weeks at the office – between July and August 2024 – and used it as a "base of operations" while playing their shows in Rome, Düsseldorf and Helsinki.[8]
Artwork and package
The album cover features a moonbow shot, taken by Argentine photographer Matías Alonso Revelli in 2020.[9] Coldplay contacted him directly to use the picture, and while he offered numerous other versions, the band ultimately maintained their initial choice.[9] The rest of the package was created by long-time collaborator Pilar Zeta.[9] CD editions of Moon Music will be the first to be released on EcoCD, created from 90% recycled polycarbonate and sourced from post-consumer waste streams.[2]
Promotion
Coldplay appear to be preparing a Global Cinema Event for their new album. Various cinema websites around the world have listed screenings for October 2. The listings suggest that lyrics + bonus materials will be played on the screens.
Budget
According to court files made public prior to Moon Music's release, former manager Dave Holmes negotiated a budget advance of £35 million with Parlophone, making it the highest of all time for an album.[10] Expenses included clearing samples, arranging recording sessions, recruiting producers and promotional campaigns.[10] However, since Holmes was later dismissed from his duties by Coldplay, the actual budget used remains unclear.[10]
Singles
The video for the lead single "Feels Like I'm Falling in Love" was shot at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus in Athens, Greece.[11] Reports from local media suggested that it had a budget of €3 million, consequently ranking among the most expensive music videos of all time.[12][13][14] The second single, "We Pray", was announced on 6 August, featuring Little Simz, Burna Boy, Elyanna and Tini. It was released on 23 August.
Track listing
Coldplay's songwriting members are Guy Berryman, Jonny Buckland, Will Champion and Chris Martin.[3]
